Our health-care system is in crisis. Nurses are working critically short staffed and the impacts to patient care are being felt across the province. Hospitals are at capacity with patients in hallways. Emergency rooms in smaller communities have been forced to close for weeks at a time, putting additional pressures on hospitals and emergency rooms in neighboring cities. Patient wait times for emergency and specialized care continue to increase. As a constituent in your riding, I am urging you to use your voice and speak up on behalf of patients and health-care workers in your riding.

We need solutions and we need government action now! BC’s nurses are working long hours to provide safe patient care, at the risk of their own physical and mental health. Eighty-two percent of nurses feel their mental health has worsened since the COVID-19 pandemic, which compounded the effects of the nurse shortage. Over 35% of nurses surveyed have expressed a desire to leave the profession within the next two years. Nursing vacancies have nearly tripled from 1,904 to 5,264 in 2021. All this, while the labour market outlook for our province states that we need more than 26,000 nurses by 2031 to appropriately staff our health-care system.
